Today, science communication is demanded and promoted in all areas of research, and the world of ideas and initiatives for implementation is broad and diverse. But who do these offers actually reach? Let’s discuss this on Wednesday, May 15, together with representatives of the four research centers for science communication funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, but also with all interested parties.
From August 1 to September 30, 2023, Carsten Könneker will support the Kiel Science Communication Network (KielSCN) as an additional Creative Fellow. During his fellowship, he will work on parts of the concept for the participatory platform that we are building together with our practice partner Spektrum der Wissenschaft.
As of July 1, Gesine Born is the first Creative Fellow in the KielSCN. The aim of her fellowship project is to give women in science greater visibility.
Perceiving together with others and with the whole body – that is the motto of teamLab Planets Tokyo. Here, the artist collective teamLab has created an exhibition in which visitors walk barefoot through water, change the works with their presence and become one with nature. We chose it as our last visualization of the month for now.

The Laokoon Group’s “Made to Measure” project impressively demonstrates the impact our digital footprint can have. We selected it as our Visualization of the Month in May.
Insects are far more than just small creatures buzzing around us. They play a crucial role in maintaining the delicate balance of our environment. Reuters recently published a visually captivating article titled “The Collapse of Insects” that we chose as our Visualization of the Month #10.
In April/May we have some exciting events for all people interested. The first one, on April 17, is the WissKomm Salon as part of an exhibition of the Science Communication Lab. This will be followed by an online discussion on ChatGPT and two presentations with design experts.
The Gaia Space Telescope has been mapping the Milky Way since December 2013. In the interactive visualization Gaia’s Stellar Family Portrait, the European Space Agency (ESA) presents the results of the mission. We have chosen it as our visualization of the month March.
KielSCN Senior PI Hinrich Schulenburg, professor at Kiel University, has been awarded the Kiel Science Award 2023. The prize, which is endowed with 10,000 Euros, will be awarded at a ceremony on June 25.
For the course of a year, Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec sent each other postcards with their personal data visualizations. The result is the book “Dear Data”. As an example, for our visualization of the month #8 we have chosen a week that is all about goodbyes.
